Global & Multicultural Education
NESA associates have delivered hundreds of cross-cultural and inclusivity workshops to businesses, educators, NGO staff, administrators, interns, and other groups. Workshops are interactive, practical and effective. As one Canada World Youth supervisor described a NESA workshop, “Although I found all of the sessions useful, the one that really spurred motivation and that I felt I most needed was Don’s session. It really increased my comfort level. . .and provided many, many concrete tools to take into the field.”

International Youth Intern Program
The International Youth Internship Program, coordinated by NESA associate Kelly Flynn, provided more than 60 Canadian university graduates with transformational four-month internship placements in Africa over a five-year period.
In the process, students, faculty, staff, and community members of the host institution, Okanagan University College, were provided with a window on the realities and opportunities of the developing world through community events and classroom visits. The program included carefully designed pre-departure training, careful selection of meaningful placements with strong NGOs working in rural Africa, ensuring supports and supervision for the interns while overseas, and a week of debriefing and community engagement after the placements. |
NESA Activities Handbook for Native and Multicultural Classrooms
This three-volume resource was written and adapted by NESA associates based on their extensive experience in all phases of cross-cultural and global education. The handbooks provide teachers of all age groups with activities developed and adapted for their effectiveness in challenging stereotypes and promoting greater cross-cultural understanding and acceptance. The materials were chosen by the BC Teacher’s Federation as one of their Top 10 teacher resources.
“Taking an experiential approach, [these handbooks] offer exercises selected for the ability to involve learners, to introduce and explain concepts, and for the capacity to have a meaningful impact on students. The games focus on and develop attitudes necessary for multicultural awareness and sensitivity. Designed for use in multicultural and Native classrooms, but an excellent resource for any instructor interested in challenging stereotypes and incorporating community issues. . .” - DECODA Annotated Materials |
Africa: Communities in ActionThis resource is comprised of a DVD of the documentary The Gambia: Communities in Action, and an extensive instructional guide that makes the broad study of development issues engaging and compelling. Funded through CIDA’s Global Classroom Initiative, the creation of the materials grew out of a demand by instructors for effective, accessible instructional materials for teaching globaI education in secondary and post-secondary classrooms.
It has been praised by some of the leading international development professionals in Canada: “I'm honoured to have a small place in this remarkable project. Any student who successfully completes this ambitious new course material will be more than ready to become Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In fact, I would go further. No member of a Canadian government should be allowed to deal with international issues unless they have seen this DVD and gone through these materials.” - Dr. Gerald Caplan, Ontario’s Institute for Studies in Education For more information, please visit the distributor's website. |
